Game Server Shutdown...

Posted: 17-12-2008 07:27 AM
By: Probationer

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately we will have to shutdown all game servers.

EDIT NOTE: GMOD IS MOVING TO A NEW HOST ARRANGED BY MESSAGEBOY!

The website/forums will remain online.

Firstly I am grateful for all the time/effort you guys have voluntarily put into the site and servers over the now years (in some cases, Renegade / duke). We have had our ups/downs and some great fun along the way (I hope you have to).

Basically we our unable to keep dropping the monthly $$$ into PG and our ISP has finally hit us with the banstick, we did around 1.5TB throughput last month (which is no higher than i used to torrent/usenet this connection but anyways). If we were in a better situation financially we would be willing to fight this but as we are we cannot.

Although Beaver and myself do accept blame for not being able to at least make PG self sufficient it has not been helped by sponsors who constantly provide empty promises/little follow through or as we have seen with the CS comp way back in March such a bad service that it reflected negatively. As a result of that comp the CS community here basically perished within a couple of months.

I know recently the gmod guys have been putting in a lot of work with their LUA coding and development etc, I am completely happy for this work to be migrated to a new host under whatever name they choose (Beaver and myself see no benefit in holding anyone back for namesake) .

We do have a small hope that we may be able to arrange hosting in Q1 2009, but on what scale and quality we have no idea (but don't hold your breath).

--------------------

On a more personal note. I started PG back in November 2006 as a simple small CSS server I think it started off as 24 slots D2 24/7. I didnt get around to launching the first site until Jan/Feb sometime at which it had been bumped up to its 40 slots. At the time it was run on an Opteron 170 with a massive 1GB of ram lol. Things ramped up pretty quickly being the only CSS server with more than 32 slots we were pretty much full 18+ hours a day with queues on the weekends (ah those were the days). It was great fun and we had a growing community but lacked any kind of decent website something that would continue to annoy the crap out of me until this day! (not directed at anyone but myself btw).

So thank you once again, I hope down the track we will be able to host/run servers again but for now its shutdown time.

Probationer.

eGames Expo @ iDef 2008

By: Beaver

Hey guys,

Beaver Here from Pubgamer
PubGamer

Thought id fill you in on eGames expo this year.

I got to attend the expo this year and help out a few of my friends and sponsors.
Ash from TekTime radio - Tektime Radio - Home
David from Audion / Edifier / Razer - Welcome to Audion Australia Website - Home
Michael Woods from BigLeague
The boys at GameStah and Australian Gamer

Coming in on the Thursday and Friday night to help out the Australian Gamer intel stand we were faced with the massive task of setting up the Intel stage (seen Below)

This massive task had a few mishaps along the way but we got it looking magnificent.
Now, we were told the Curtains at the back would go up to 6 meters, what we werent told was that @ 6 meters, they wouldnt stay there.
Needless to say we lost 1x 50" plasma screen......

Ash's TekTime Guitar hero comp brought in the crowds with an awesome display of costumes and Skill
We even got to see Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation Rock it up (seen on right image below)
The Crowd was amazing when watching these guys, especially when you threw crowd candy (free promo gear supplied by Razer)
Half way into Saturdays event we were hit with an emergency Evacuation after there was apparently a fire. I will confirm this later on with the event Organizer. I got told off by security after we were "exciting" the crowd with more Razer gear being thrown out to the masses

at the end of the day i got to attend an amazing event and meet some cool people. *looks around to see if GF is watching me type this post* also got to meet some promo girls.

Red Alert 3 Review [pc]

Posted: 16-11-2008 05:17 PM
By: Salad Fingers

Another addition to the Command and Conquer Series with the third installment of Red Alert now out. The original Red Alert was absolutely amazing in my opinion and was practically the game that got me into gaming in the first place. Does Red Alert's latest game live up to it's hype or will it live the same life as a bad overhyped game such as haze?

The game uses the same engine as Command and Conquer 3 with a few more enhancements. I must say that the water effects look extremely good for an rts. The overall graphics however are a bit of a letdown. They just seemed too cartoonish for my liking. The AI is extremely challenging even on easy and actually gets you into the game alot more than other rts single player campaings. The majority of the missions in the game are able to be played in co-op over the internet and if you don't happen to have a friend that's able to play, a friendly AI helps you out. This is all and well but when you have to share your resources with your team it makes the game a bit tiresome when you're trying to repair your base but you can't because your ally is building too many tanks.

The cursed ore node

The fact that every unit has a secondary attack as well as the fact that you get points to add into upgrades or passive/aggressive abilities is evidence that the developers of RA3 were trying too hard to make the game so much more dense and complicated than it really is. The use of ore nodes instead of having the ore spread round an area like in previous CnC games also ruins the game for me as you are restricted to only one harvester per node (you can assign more harvesters to the nodes but it doesn't go any faster) which makes gaining resources frustrating because you have to expand your base and build a refinery in a spot where you cant afford to protect. The three factions have different ways of building which is actually pretty interesting and adds variety to the game. The naval aspect of the game is overrated as the majority of the standard naval units are too expensive to even consider to use as your primary force.

A couple of Dreadnoughts making short work of a few power plants

The story is about as good as a Red Alert story can get which isn't a bad thing. There are actually a fair few few big name actors/actresses, models(drools) and athletes who add great atmosphere to the briefings, missions and cut scenes.

/drools

In Summary: Not what I remembered of the old Red Alerts but still a good all round game. Still feel that Command and Conquer 3 is better.

I give it a 7/10

Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway Review [pc]

Posted: 24-10-2008 12:37 AM
By: Salad Fingers

First of all, I'd like to stipulate that I have played and finished the first Brothers in Arms and to be totally honest, I thought that the newest game in the Brothers in Arms franchise was a bit of a let down.

Okay lets start with how the game looks and feels. It uses the Unreal Engine 3 which is used in practically every second game that has been made this year. The only difference between those games and BiA:HH is that the game actually looks bad in some parts. A lot of the graphical features that were announced to be included, were not included. Don't get me wrong, I do think it looks okay for a current gen title but I guess once you've had Crysis, you don't think anything looks good. The physics engine was practically non existent with some of the enemy deaths looking totally ridiculous. The cutscenes looked good and told the story well but the bad lip syncing and lack of facial animations kinda ruined the mood of the story.
