I own an XB360 and it is a quality gaming console (puts on flame suit). If you enjoy multiplayer gaming the xbox live system is one of the best around. the con is it has a subscription fee.
apparently 2/3 xbox's fail at some stage although this problem ius believed to have been rectified and all new xbox's are much more stable.
The XB still holds a large lead over the PS3 when you compare gaming titles. it's library is much larger.
If you are into blu-ray and want to utilise it then the PS3 may be the way to go.
Keep reading around other forums and stuff before you make your desicion, and once you've made your decision, enjoy it!

Who was that admin who posted above me?
I dont own any gaming consoles... but
I would go for the 360 because its probably more in use than PS3 (More games/users etc) but im not sure if this is still true or if the ps3 has started to take off.

First off whatever you do DO NOT watch you tube videos of good old "360 vs PS3" the reason being that compare the two in a range of areas and award a point for the winner of each area. And i've found that pretty much all have the PS3 winning by a large margin.
The problem with the reviews is that they are done by, to be brutally honest, a bunch of retards. They claim the ps3 is better in regards to cpu power, graphics power and stupid things like it can have 7 controllers as opposed to 4.
Now honestly unless you have a projector are you really going to have 7 players on one tv? a pointless comparison. In regards to the cpu power, yes the ps3 has more cores and potentially more processing power but at the moment the game developers can't even use all of it, and this is straight from a game developer they say that they can design more complex games for the 360 because they can use all the power its cpu has to offer where the ps3 they cannot.
In terms of graphics again your youtube reviews say ps3 tops 360 because the ps3's gpu has its own RAM where the 360 shares with the cpu. Again straight from a game developer who works on both 360 games and ps3 games is that the 360's gpu is more powerful than the ps3's because it has a much bigger pipeline capacity. And you might notice that in the specs the ps3 doesnt actually state there gpu's pipeline because they now that the 360 outperforms it.
i own a 360, my reasons being that there are better game titles out there, cost, and performance.
i only outlined a few of things i read up on, but trust me the reviews you see on youtube and are a joke, look for some by game developers thats the only accurate comparison you can get.
They reckon once they can actually take advantage of the ps3's crazy 7 cpu thingo that they will be able to develop games that will be alot better than anything the 360 can do, they say it will be a while till that happens though. and by that time there will probably be new consoles out anyway.

Only go the PS3 if you want a Blu-Ray player.

If you are basing your decision between ps3 and 360 on the online play then LOL at you. 360 online services are alot better than the ps3's because you have to pay for the service so it is a well maintained system.
And the ps3 your looking around 600 to 700 where as the 360 is around 450 - 500. Theres 2.5 years of online gaming paid for with that difference in price.
That reasoning for ps3 over 360 is rather, to put it in a nice way, illogical.

Well i own a PS3, and i would never touch a XB360. Who wants a console with a 30% fail rate? As for titles the PS3 has ALOT of exclusive content coming with a growing library. It is more powerful, looks better, free online play, trophies, in-game XMB, Blu-ray player, WiFi, upgradable HDD, HOME coming, i could go on forever.
You might pay a little more initially but look at what you get over the XB360, it's alot.
